Well before dawn on the first day of 2015, I snuck out of the house with my bike and my Garmin and “painted” a New Year’s message on the streets of Victoria, BC. Failed exclamation point notwithstanding, my Strava handiwork got enthusiastic kudos from many members of my cycling club. And since I like kudos and praise almost as much as I like cycling and creative pursuits, I decided to embrace Strava artwork as a way both to spend some of my free time and recharge my creative batteries.

Thank you, Cynthia. If my efforts inspire people to embrace and explore the convergence of fitness and creativity, I’ll consider them a success indeed!

Thanks for the kind compliment, Neil. What excites me about GPS art is that it opens up “creativity” to anyone with a GPS device and a means of getting around – a bike, a scooter, a pair of running shoes… My “art” evolved rapidly through a willingness to experiment, explore, blunder, go back to the drawing board, persist and, above all, get over the notion that I’m not very good at drawing things. (I’m actually a writer. Illustration has never been my strong suit.)

Keep cycling! Victoria is a great place. And leave a doodle all over town is a great way to keep fit.

These are terrific Stephen! Congrats on being invited to speak at TEDx. I created a discussion about you on my Strava club https://www.strava.com/clubs/77152/discussion. I’m looking at my map of North Vancouver and pondering what I can do with it

As a student in Geography I’m interested,
May I ask about how do you track the route you went through? Is it using GPS receiver or GPS applications?

I track my rides using a Garmin Edge 800 – a GPS receiver designed for cyclists.

I have posted my walking and recently my cycling paths on google map to my facebook timeline a couple of times, today one of my dearest friends send me a link to your gps arts, just wow ! I liked it a lot, and I shared it with this note: “I found one of my dream jobs ! or hobbies or job-hobby (yes, one of … they are not only one”
I wonder if you think to make it a social hobby for your followers or not ? as an example, I will be happy to learn how to do it in Milano, and I will be more than happy to share the result with you ! I think this could be a good idea to inspire more cycling and physical activity 🙂

Hi Ali – I totally agree. Because it disguises “exercise” as creative expression and urban exploration, it has a lot of potential as a way to inspire people to get physically active.
