Six months. Two wheels. 50 GPS doodles.

Since I started pedalling my art on the streets of Victoria on the first day of 2015, I’ve amassed a portfolio of 50 GPS doodles – 34 pictures, 11 bike-writing messages and five creations that comprise a combination of both. Click on the poster below to see 31 of my favourites…plus the one that started it all!

Below the poster, I’ve included the link to each featured GPS doodle and its accompanying write-up.

Thank you, Raine, for the reblog. It really is a great lesson in art and geography. Through the act of creative expression, I’ve become intimately familiar with every nook and cranny of the city I now call home.

      • 🙂 I know my students do a lot of traveling between school, sports and other things… But I doubt they take the time to really pay attention to the actual directions they are traveling. To me the arts are integrated into every aspect of human existence though we take little time to notice… This would definitely be a great example to share with them!

This is quite impressive! I just started running using an app that will track my runs and I’ve been brainstorming fun pictures to draw. Not sure I’ll ever be able to live up to your artistry though! Keep up the good work and dedication!

Hey Victoria – good luck and have fun! Experiment, explore and don’t get discouraged if things don’t turn out as planned. My early efforts were pretty rough and rudimentary. Once you get a feel for the roads, the process and the possibilities, the sky’s the limit!

Thanks, Brooke. As a fellow writer, I very much relate to the quotation at the top of your blog. One of the very real benefits of GPS doodling, I’ve found, is that it helps to filter and quell “the noise of life clogging the mind.”

What interesting doodles! How did you get interested in this type of art?

    • Stephen says:

I work as a creative professional, and I’m an avid cyclist. GPS doodles are simply the convergence of these two passions. After I purchased a Garmin a year ago, I had an immediate sense that those red GPS data lines representing my rides offered a tremendous opportunity for creative expression. I started experimenting early in 2015, and my “art” evolved rapidly from there.

It has definitely made for a welcome change of pace from the roads and routes I’d otherwise be riding day in and day out. It has also added a new sense of purpose to my rides, and it’s always thrilling to download my ride data and see if my doodles have turned out as planned. You should absolutely give it a try!

      • Stephen says:

There’s definitely a good chunk of time that goes into planning and prep — anywhere from two to 10 or more hours per doodle, depending on the level of detail and the “cooperativeness” of the map/roads.

The biggest peril I face is the aggressive motorist. I try to do my doodles at times when the traffic is light, as I don’t like criss-crossing busy streets at the height of rush hour.
